What is Wales.com?

Wales.com is Wales’ main international gateway website – it’s a hub of inspiration and information for those looking to find out more about Wales as a place to invest, work, visit or study.

You can find further in-depth information about visiting Wales on the Visit Wales website; and information about investing and working in Wales  on the Trade and Invest Wales website.

Visit the Welsh Government website for information about the devolved Government for Wales.

Who is Wales.com for?

Wales.com is for anyone with an interest in finding out more about Wales as a country – and place to invest, work, visit or study.

It is mainly aimed at international audiences and is designed to provide a warm and broad introduction to Wales, with VisitWales.com and TradeandInvest.Wales providing much greater detail for those that want to find out more.

Funded by Welsh Government, Wales.com’s role is to showcase Wales on behalf of its businesses, organisations and people. Whilst it will sometimes feature information about Welsh Government or a signature policy it will do so as part of telling the broader story of Wales.

Visit the Welsh Government website for information about the devolved Government for Wales.

Is it a new website?

Wales.com has been a long-established portal for promoting Wales. The website has recently been updated as part of a project called the Wales Digital Gateway, the current phase of an ongoing programme of continual improvement to strengthen our digital marketing infrastructure and content approach for the future.

The latest version of Wales.com is on a new technical platform, shared with VisitWales.com. The website is also more magazine-like than previous versions of the site – acting as a showcase of stories from people and organisations across all parts of Wales that can also be shared through social media.

The website is currently in BETA and you can expect to see a number of further improvements in the coming months, including: more proactive use of social media; more short-form articles on various aspects of Welsh life; a new language version of the site; and technical improvements to the user experience we provide on the site.

Which languages have been included?

This version of Wales.com is available in English, Welsh, German, French and Spanish. North American visitors can also expect a localised version of the site. There are also stand-alone Japanese and Chinese Wales websites. Further language versions of Wales.com will be developed in the future.

Currently, all language variants of Wales.com are similar to each other, but over the coming year we will move to producing content that is specific to the interests of those using these versions of the site.

Who runs the website?

Wales.com and its associated social media channels is developed and managed by Welsh Government.

How is it different to Welsh Government’s website?

Wales.com is Wales’ main outward-facing international gateway website.

Its aim is to promote Wales as a country in the UK and internationally. The primary focus is very much on Wales as a country and as a place to invest, work, visit and study and the site will feature the stories of the businesses, organisations and people of Wales, often in their own words.

The website is funded by Welsh Government, but whilst the websites will sometimes refer to Welsh Government – and its signature policies – it does so as part of telling Wales’ story to international audiences.

Visit the Welsh Government website for information about the devolved Government for Wales.

Why does it feature individual businesses?

Wales.com is designed to act as a showcase for Wales in a way that is relevant and engaging for new audiences. In order to bring Wales’ story to life, individual people, businesses and organisations feature – to help illustrate Wales’ story, not to serve individual interests.

The emphasis is not on promoting any individual business. References to businesses are always in the broader context of the website wanting to say something about Wales as a place to invest, work, visit or study. There is no financial benefit to any businesses featured.

Clearly, the number of people, businesses and organisations featured in articles on Wales.com initially will be limited but this will grow over the coming years. Wales.com is also part of a broader network of international websites for Wales, such as VisitWales.com and TradeandInvest.Wales - and also links through to other important Welsh business websites - where hundreds of businesses from every part of Wales feature.

It is possible for every tourism business in Wales to be listed on VisitWales.com – and every business in Wales can also be listed on the Business Wales website, which can both be found through links from Wales.com.
