St David’s Day Message
St David’s Day Message from the Rt Hon Carwyn Jones AM, First Minister of Wales.
I’d like to wish you, wherever you are, a Happy St David’s Day. Dydd Gwyl Dewi Hapus.
Our national day is an opportunity for us to celebrate Wales and all the things that make us so proud of this small yet mighty country.
Wales’ presence continues to be felt across the world, through our lasting economic, social and cultural links.
In recent years, we have seen record inward investment and our highest ever tourism figures, while our great Welsh products are exported across the globe.
I want to build on these achievements and have the confidence to continue to forge new links across the globe.
Brexit negotiations are continuing – and, although there is much change and uncertainty ahead. Wales remains an ambitious, outward-looking country.
During these times of change, we must work even harder to raise Wales’ international profile. That is why we are expanding the Welsh Government’s overseas operations, starting with the opening of our new office in Montreal this month, followed by France, Germany and Qatar in the summer. Our increased presence overseas will help us to protect existing markets, pursue new trade and investment opportunities and promote Wales to the world.
We have a new regular route between Doha and Cardiff starting on the 1st of May. Operated by Qatar Airlines, this new route will open up Wales' links with the rest of the world and deliver new economic, leisure and travel opportunities for Welsh businesses and the people of Wales.
Back home, 2018 is the ‘Year of the Sea’. Ours is a country surrounded on three sides by sea and this is a year long celebration of our epic shores and breath-taking 870 mile coastline.
Wales is a beautiful country with broad horizons, deep roots and a culture symbolised by our patron saint who believed in doing the little things for the greater good.
Happy St David’s Day to you all.”
