Celebrating Equality and Diversity in Wales - Pride Cymru 2017
It’s Pride Cymru Big Weekend, Our Mardi Gras.
Over the course of the next three days Pride Cymru will be combined with Cardiff’s Big weekend. There will be funfair rides, musical entertainment and the official Pride parade which will begin at 11am on Saturday turning Cardiff into a festival of colour. The LGBT Communuity here and around the world will have the opportunity to unite in Cardiff and promote equality and diversity. Around 200,000 people are expected to join in the fun!
Wales is one of the most supportive nations in the world for equality and diversity. Wales were the first to bring in specific equality duties in order for public bodies to better perform their public sector equality duty, part of the Equality Act 2010 (Wales) and Regulations 2011, which came into force in April 2011.
Wales therefore has a list of equality objectives which aims to ensure public services and employment is fair, accessible, responsive to people's needs, and that communities are inclusive for all. No matter your protected characteristic, gender, sexual orientation or other, the Equalities Act 2010 is in place to make people feel as safe and respected as possible.
Stonewall Cymru is an advisory body which seeks to protect the needs of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual or Transgender? (LGBT) people in Wales. Their mission is “to help shape a Wales where people are free to be themselves, organisations help drive change, public attitudes improve, prejudice is challenged, and laws protect LGBT people”.
Events take place up and down the country each year in support of equality and one of our most famous equality events is Pride Cymru. Enjoy!
