Ashes come to Wales

Wales is welcoming the news that an Ashes test match will be held at the SWALEC Stadium, home of Glamorgan Cricket Club, in 2015.

First Minister of Wales, Carwyn Jones welcomed the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) decision and said:

"I'm delighted that the ECB has made the decision to award an Ashes test Match to Glamorgan Cricket Club in 2015.

"The Welsh Government was fully supportive of Glamorgan Cricket's vision to bring an Ashes Test to Wales in 2009 and we have been working closely with the Club to build on that historic achievement.

"We now look forward to working in partnership with Glamorgan to deliver a series of world class events here in Cardiff over the next few years which will further enhance Wales' growing international reputation as a major events destination."

In total, the SWALEC Stadium will now host a further 8 internationals up to 2016, in addition to staging the 2012 Friends Life t20 Finals Day.

Glamorgan Cricket Chairman, Barry O’Brien, added: "In the past decade, Wales has led the way in staging a number of successful high profile sporting events – these include the 2009 Ashes Test match, the 2010 Ryder Cup and countless FA Cup and Heineken Cup Finals.

“The ECB’s announcement will also enable Cricket Wales to implement its exciting plans to further develop cricket..."
