A Ryder Cup Heritage Exhibition, illustrating the rich history of one of the most compelling events in world sport, will be on display in Newport and Cardiff through the summer as the build-up to The 2010 Ryder Cup gathers pace.
The Ryder Cup began in 1927 as a match between the professionals of Great Britain and the United States, and the Heritage Exhibition will tell the story of The Ryder Cup from its humble beginnings to the present day.
A fascinating and unique collection of Ryder Cup Memorabilia, from historic signed programmes and menus to team gifts and equipment, will be central to the display, brought to life by photography from those first encounters more than 80 years ago right through to recent matches.
The Ryder Cup Heritage Exhibition will first visit The Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre in Newport from July 24 to August 19.
The exhibition will then move to Wales’ capital city to go on display at Amgueddfa Cymru - National Museum Cardiff from August 22 to September 23.
And finally, when the eyes of the sporting world are focused on the first Ryder Cup to be held in Wales, the exhibition will be in the tented village at The Celtic Manor Resort for the thousands of spectators who will flock to see Colin Montgomerie’s European Team take on the United States Team led by Corey Pavin from September 27–October 3.
David Wright, Heritage and Member Support Executive, The Professional Golfers' Association, said: "This is an enthralling illustration of The Ryder Cup engaging with the local community. This exhibition brings to life the rich heritage of golf’s greatest team event. Visitors will get a fascinating insight into how The Ryder Cup has evolved over the years."
Rob Holt, Chief Executive of Ryder Cup Wales, added: "There will be many opportunities for the Welsh public and visitors to the area to share in the experience of The 2010 Ryder Cup, one of which will be a chance to go and see – at one of two city centre venues – a fascinating display of Ryder Cup memorabilia. In order to get a great taste of the event from years gone by, I urge everyone to make time to go along and take a look."
