‘The Zero Carbon Transition Conference is happening at just the right moment in time. With a new US administration that acknowledges the vital importance of multilateral action on climate change, the best minds in Wales will get a chance to share their experience with their US counterparts and together build a foundation for real change. We at the Centre for Alternative Technology are genuinely excited and truly honoured to be given this opportunity’

The Zero Carbon Transition Conference: Welsh Pathways to Sustainability

Coordinated by the Wales-based Centre for Alternative Technology, the Zero Carbon Transition Conference brings together leading thinkers from Wales to focus on the challenges set by the three big issues of our time: climate, energy and economics. The conference will make the case for rapid decarbonisation across all sectors and will explore the policies and technological tools we have at our disposal to make this transition happen.

The Zero Carbon Transition Conference will be:

  • a platform for Welsh and Wales-based policy makers, researchers, academics, engineers and designers to showcase their ideas and work to audiences in the United States.
  • a space to explore climate, energy and economics; taking steps to frame the situation, understand the challenges and grasp the solutions.
  • a sharing of knowledge leading to positive action on both sides of the Atlantic.

Over four days in June and July, leading thinkers from Wales will present the fascinating and innovative work that they have been developing, researching, designing and planning for the zero carbon transition. A programme of lectures will look in detail at the situation, the challenges and the solutions. A series of seminars will go deeper and develop means to network knowledge between thinkers and doers in Wales and the US. An audio-visual production : the "Energy Story of Wales" will weave together archive footage from the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales with present footage to create a rich tapestry of images exploring the narrative of energy production, generation and usage and its impact on the Welsh landscape and culture.

The Zero Carbon Transition Conference will instigate a new era of collaboration between Wales and the US and help to create the shift in energy and economic strategy that will safeguard our climate, now and for the future.

Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT)

Pioneers of sustainability, with 35 five years experience communicating climate change and energy issues, the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT) is Europe’s leading ecocentre and a hub in Wales and the UK for environmental building and renewable energy systems and policies.

CAT is a living, working example of sustainability in practice, based in the foot hills of Snowdonia, Wales. On the site of an old slate quarry, the Centre displays how technical know-how and a lot of visionary thinking can combine to turn a post-industrial landscape into a thriving environmental education centre. CAT’s Zero Carbon Britain report is the practical blueprint for a sustainable energy future that has influenced the climate change and energy debate in the UK at a government level.
