Welsh flags in rugby crowd at Millennium Stadium

We enjoy our traditional sports like football and rugby but also love taking part in some more unusual activities such as the World Bog Snorkelling Championships held annually in mid Wales.

Our national stadium, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, hosts many international sporting events. It has capacity for 74,500 people and is the largest stadium in Europe to feature a fully retractable roof. The Welsh rugby team and the Welsh national football team play here but the stadium also doubles up as a venue for other events such as the final for motor sport’s World Rally Championship.

We love our water sports in Wales. Wakestock, currently Europe’s largest wakeboard (a combination of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing) festival, is held on the Llŷn Peninsula in north Wales. Surfing and sailing are other favourite activities on our 750 miles of coastline.

The world’s third largest sporting event, the Ryder Cup, is coming to the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, south Wales in 2010. The Celtic Manor is one of Europe’s leading golf resorts. And our other 200 golf courses aren’t bad either.

We’re also playing host to international cricket. A number of international games including the 2009 Ashes Test opener are being played in south Wales.

We’re proud of our achievements in international sport. Our sport icons include Joe Calzaghe CBE, the longest reigning title holder in any weight class in boxing, and Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson, the 11 times gold medal winning paralympic athlete. More recently, our Olympic champions did us proud. Nicole Cooke was the first person to win gold for Team GB in the Beijing Olympics and the first to bring home gold for Wales in 26 years.
