Wales and Argentina

Our Welsh rugby team are getting ready to play Argentina at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday (21 Nov) bringing together two nations that have been strongly linked since 1865.

Towards the end of 19th century, led by Michael D Jones, many Welsh migrants went to Patagonia to establish a settlement together that would help them to retain their Welsh identity.

Today there is still a strong Welsh colony in Chubut which is supported by the Argentine and Welsh governments to maintain its Welsh heritage.

In 2001 a memorandum of understanding between Wales and Chubut was signed and it was reaffirmed in 2007 in Caerphilly castle by the Governor of Chubut, Mario Das Neves, and the First Minister, Rhodri Morgan.

So we’re looking forward to welcoming some friendly faces to Wales this weekend!
