Wales Rally GB
We’re enjoying superb motoring action in Wales with Britain's round of the 2012 World Rally Championship, the Wales Rally GB, currently taking place. The rally continues until Sunday (16 September).
This year's competitors include French Eight-time World Rally Champion Sébastien Loeb, Finnish rally drivers Mikko Hirvonen and Jari-Matti Latvala and Norwegian driver Petter Solberg. The British drivers include Matthew Wilson and Scott Martin and there’s a number of Welsh drivers including Tom Cave from Gwynedd, Sara Williams, from Brecon and Pembrokeshire’s Shôn Rees.
The rally began in Llandudno in north west Wales yesterday and today Newtown has been a buzz with fans. Those in Newtown were in for a double sporting treat as the Tour of Britain took place at the same time in the mid Wales town. The rally heads to south Wales, where it will continue over the weekend.
People coming to celebrate the homecoming of the Welsh Olympians and Paralympians tonight will also have a double treat, as Roald Dahl Plass, Cardiff Bay is being used by two of the teams to repair and service the vehicles.
It’s the 12th year running the rally has come to Wales and this year there’s a new special stage at the Celtic Manor Resort, venue of 2010's Ryder Cup. On Sunday the rally takes place in Cardiff and Port Talbot before returning to the capital city and finishing in Cardiff Bay. We hope all those going will enjoy it and look forward to welcoming the rally back next year too.
