Local bands play Radio 1 Big Weekend gigs

A series of free gigs across north Wales are being held in the build-up to BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend on 22 and 23 May, giving a platform for local bands.

Starting in Wrexham on Monday 17 May, The Fringe Festival then visits Colwyn Bay and Caernarfon, culminating in a four-venue event in Bangor. Radio 1 DJ Bethan Elfyn believes the concentration of activities in north Wales could have a lasting impact on the area's music scene. "Like the old saying goes, with this one little event we might be moving mountains!"

Announcing The Fringe Festival details on his Radio 1 show, DJ Huw Stephens also revealed the line-up for the BBC Introducing Stage at the Faenol Estate, Bangor, including bands from Wales like The Joy Formidable and I Am Austin. "The BBC Introducing Stage always has a good atmosphere and a really diverse line-up of up and coming artists who get a wider platform to play on at festivals," said Huw.

The Fringe Festival will showcase local talent in a different location each night, celebrating everything about the local music scene, from guitar bands through to bedroom DJs, MCs and everything in between.
