The winter solstice takes place on 21 December 2017.
There are three public holidays during the winter months: Christmas Day, Boxing Day (25, 26 December) and New Year’s day (1 January). If any of these dates fall during a weekend, a day in lieu is given. So in 2016 Tuesday is a public holiday (Christmas Day substitute day).
Schools break up for holidays a few days before Christmas. Pupils return to school in early January for the beginning of the spring term.
The spring half term takes place around about the second week of February.
Universities usually break up for Christmas slightly before schools, around 17 December. In early January many Universities have examinations, with the new spring semester starting in late January. See individual Universities for details.
